The £1m renovation and redevelopment of the Rock & Fountain Inn in Penhow breathed new life into the historic 17th century coaching inn (which closed in 2009) and the surrounding land.
The challenge with the Inn itself was to preserve the historic features, including the original wooden bar surface, windows frames and panelling, while modernising the space and making it more practical.
Many of the facilities were completely replaced including the kitchens, which now provide high quality food preparation areas for the inn, and the two private dining rooms on the first floor. The introduction of a feature fireplace between two areas of the main bar opened up the space while retaining the intimate atmosphere.
The coaching house restaurant, which provides a great value offer of two course meal for £10.95, is run by Gareth Lee.
The other restaurant on the site is The Indian Cottage, situated in the old tithe barn and offering authentic Indian meals..
There are also eight studio and one-bedroom holiday apartments in a mix of converted and new outbuildings. Fitted out to a very high standard in a traditional style with exposed oak woodwork, fitted kitchens and an en suite bathroom, the apartments are managed by the Inn.
The site landscaped to include a large courtyard beer garden, extensive parking for cars.
